Jacqueline Avila

Student Attorney

I am a third-year law student at Texas Tech School of Law and a student attorney at DebnamRust, P.C. At DebnamRust, I practice Family Law, Child-Welfare Law, and Juvenile Law. As an advocate, I strive to be collaborative and believe in being an active listener instead of over-speaking. I also speak Spanish fluently.

I am a first-generation college graduate and soon-to-be law graduate from the Dallas area. My parents are both immigrants from Mexico who came to the United States as children and have worked hard to give me and my three younger brothers educational and life opportunities that they were not afforded. My upbringing has heavily influenced my understanding of the challenges that minorities and marginalized groups face in our justice system, and it is what initially drew me to law.

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Texas at Arlington. While attending Texas Tech School of Law, I worked at the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office during my first two years, where I primarily worked in the Juvenile courts and in the felony courts. I was President of the Criminal Law Association during my 2L year and brought guest speakers, including Elizabeth Smart and the San Antonio Five to Tech Law. I am also a member of the Tech Law Advocacy Program, Board of Barristers.

Outside of work, I enjoy reading fiction books, going to my boyfriend’s soccer games, spending time with our dog and cat, trying new coffee shops wherever I go, and doing yoga, Pilates, and running.
